Moving Up in Private Equity

Slowly but surely women are edging upwards in the world of private equity.

New research from Preqin, a London-based alternative assets research firm, finds that women holding senior private equity roles has increased to 10.4% in 2012 for firms in Asia and across the world (excepting North America and Europe), up from 8.7% in 2011. In North America, 9.2% of senior roles are held by women, roughly flat from 8.9% in 2011.

Certain firms are better than others for women. PE firms that specialize in infrastructure have the largest percentage of women filling senior roles at 13.5%. Real estate-focused firms came in second with 12%.

It may be wise to choose a firm with six to 10 senior employees. At such firms, women accounted for 10.4% of the senior team; they accounted for 9.2% of senior roles at firms with five or fewer senior employees.
